The One Spray That Saved My Plant Collection (And How to Make It Yourself)

The Bring-Home Spray Routine: How I Keep New Plants Pest-Free From Day One

Bringing home a new plant is one of the best feelings for any plant parent. The excitement, the fresh foliage, the promise of new growth — it’s all part of the joy of collecting. But if you’ve ever bought a plant that looked healthy only to discover pests, fungus, or bacterial spots a few days later, you already know why the first 24 hours with a new plant are so important.

Whether you shop big box stores, local greenhouses, or Marketplace, new plants often go through stress, inconsistent care, and crowded conditions before they ever make it to your home. And stressed plants are prime targets for pests like spider mites, thrips, and mealybugs — along with fungal issues that spread quickly if not caught early.

That’s why I created my simple, affordable, and extremely effective "Bring-Home Spray". It’s the exact mixture I use every single time a new plant enters my home, and it has helped keep my collection healthier, cleaner, and far more resilient over the years.

This isn’t about harsh chemicals or expensive specialty treatments. It’s about prevention using gentle, plant-safe ingredients that work together to stop problems before they start.

Let’s walk through the routine and why each ingredient matters — and then I’ll show you exactly how to make it yourself.

Why a “Bring-Home Spray” Matters

Most people wait until they see pests before they take action. But by then, pests have already done damage — especially tiny ones that hide under leaves and around new growth.

A good "Bring-Home Spray":

  • Removes hidden pests before they spread

  • Helps prevent fungal spores from settling

  • Cleans the leaves so the plant can breathe

  • Reduces shock from inconsistent care environments

  • Gives your new plant a healthier start in its new home

It’s a simple step that protects not just your new plant, but your entire collection.

The Three Products That Make It Work

My "Bring-Home Spray" uses three inexpensive, easy-to-find products that work beautifully together. Each has a purpose, and together they create a powerful but gentle first line of defense.

1. Neem Oil — For Pest Prevention

Neem oil has been used for plant care for decades. Derived from neem tree seeds, it helps interrupt pest life cycles by making it harder for them to feed or reproduce. You may not see pests right away on a new plant, but neem helps ensure you don’t see them later.

Two capfuls is the perfect amount for a standard spray bottle — strong enough to work, gentle enough for regular use.

2. Peppermint Castile Soap — Helps Spray Stick & Deters Pests

Peppermint castile soap isn’t just a cleanser. It:

  • Helps neem and other ingredients stick to the plant

  • Breaks down residue on leaves

  • Adds natural deterrence (pests hate peppermint)

One tablespoon is all you need for a full bottle.

This little ingredient does a LOT of quiet work to make the spray more effective.

3. Earth’s Alley 3-in-1 Concentrate — For Fungus & Bacteria Prevention

New plants go through a lot: inconsistent watering, humidity swings, store lighting, and handling. Stressed plants often attract fungus and bacteria — two things most plant parents never notice until spots appear.

This 3-in-1 concentrate supports your plant by:

  • Helping prevent fungal growth

  • Providing a gentle antibacterial effect

  • Helping prevent pests with organic products thrips and spider mites hate.

Four tablespoons gives the spray an extra boost, especially for plants that were sitting in overly wet, crowded nursery soil.

How to Mix the Bring Home Spray

Here’s the simple recipe you can use at home:

Shake well before every use.

That’s it — four easy ingredients, and your spray is ready.

How and When I Use It

Every new plant I bring home gets the same treatment:

  1. I place the plant inside a clear plastic bag.

  2. I spray the "Bring Home Spray" generously from top to bottom.

  3. I coat stems, undersides of leaves, and soil surface.

  4. I leave the plant in the bag or clear bin for a couple of weeks to quarantine.

  5. I repeat this process, alternating with 70% alcohol spray every three days for two weeks.

  6. I then repot it and introduce it to its new family!

This process keeps the spray contained, prevents cross-contamination, and ensures the plant is fully coated.

It’s simple, it’s fast, and it has made a huge difference in the health of my collection.

A Clean Start for Every New Plant

There’s nothing worse than introducing pests or fungal issues to an established collection. The "Bring Home Spray" routine gives you peace of mind and gives your new plant a clean, supported start.

If you’ve ever struggled with pests after bringing home plants — especially from big box stores — this small step can save you time, money, and frustration.

Your plants deserve a healthy beginning, and you deserve confidence when adding new green babies to your home.
