About This Plant

Alocasia California is currently best treated in horticulture as a compact cultivated form of Alocasia odora, rather than a documented hybrid. It was sold for many years under the name Alocasia gageana ‘California’, which is why both names can still be found in plant shops and online. The underlying Alocasia odora species is native from eastern India through parts of East and Southeast Asia to southern Japan and Borneo.

This plant is known for its broad, glossy green leaves, prominent veins and strong upright growth. It delivers the tropical Elephant Ear look while remaining more compact than many of the much larger Alocasia types.

This exact plant has been growing in my care for over 12 months and is ready to move into a larger pot. It is also at a mature size where cormlets or offsets may be developing, but their presence cannot be confirmed without removing the plant from its pot and is not guaranteed.

How to Keep It Happy

Light: Bright, indirect or filtered light is ideal. Gentle morning sun may be suitable after gradual acclimation, but harsh direct afternoon sun can scorch the leaves.

Water: Water when the top 1–2 inches of the potting medium begin to dry. Water thoroughly and allow excess water to drain. Avoid keeping the roots continuously soggy, but do not leave the plant completely dry for an extended period during active growth.

Soil: Use an airy, well-draining aroid mix that holds some moisture without becoming compacted or waterlogged.

Humidity: Prefers moderate to high humidity. Approximately 50–70% works well when paired with good airflow.

Temperature: Prefers approximately 65–85°F. Protect from cold drafts, frost and prolonged temperatures below 60°F.

Current Growing Conditions

Environment: Grown in indoor and outdoor greenhouse spaces and moved seasonally
Humidity: Approximately 60–75%
Current Light: Indirect sunlight
Current Potting Medium: Happy Houseplant Haven’s Chunky Classic Mix
Repot Status: Needs to be moved into a larger pot

This plant may need 7–14 days to acclimate to the light, temperature and humidity in its new home. Some leaf movement, repositioning or temporary slowing of growth can occur during the adjustment period.

Move it up only one pot size into a wider container with drainage. If the plant arrives stable and shows no immediate signs of stress, allow it to acclimate before repotting. If the roots or current container cannot support the plant safely, repot sooner while disturbing the root system as little as possible.

Recycled Pot Note

This plant is growing in a recycled nursery pot. Any branding printed on the container is from the pot’s previous use and does not identify the plant’s grower, source or brand. This is not a Proven Winners plant.

Important Plant Note

Live plants naturally change over time and may have small cosmetic imperfections, including minor leaf marks, natural blemishes or older leaf damage. The plant may also continue growing between the time it is photographed and purchased.

Corms and offsets are not included or guaranteed unless they are specifically shown and stated in the listing.
