About This Plant

Hoya Mathilde is a horticultural hybrid combining Hoya carnosa and Hoya serpens. It originated in Belgium in the 1990s and combines the thicker, succulent-like foliage of carnosa with the smaller, rounded growth of serpens. The leaves are naturally flecked with silver, with plants sold as “Splash” selected for especially noticeable silver markings.

These Haven’s Choice plants have been growing in my care for over 12 months and are well established for their pot size. Many are already developing multiple growth points, giving them a nice start toward becoming fuller, trailing plants.

As they mature, Hoya Mathilde can produce clusters of small, waxy, star-shaped flowers.

How to Keep It Happy

Light: Bright, indirect light is ideal. Good light supports compact growth, silver coloration and flowering. Avoid suddenly placing it in harsh direct sun.

Water: Water thoroughly, then allow the potting mix to dry almost completely before watering again. Avoid keeping the roots continuously wet.

Soil: Use a chunky, airy, fast-draining potting medium that allows plenty of oxygen around the roots.

Humidity: Adapts well to average household humidity. Around 40–60% works well, although moderately higher humidity can encourage growth when paired with good airflow.

Temperature: Prefers approximately 65–80°F. Protect from cold drafts and temperatures below 55°F.
