About This Plant

Hoya Obovata Splash is a cultivated selection of the species Hoya obovata, not a hybrid. The species is native to Thailand, Vietnam, Sulawesi, and the Maluku Islands, where it grows as an epiphyte in wet tropical environments; the original horticultural origin of the ‘Splash’ selection is not reliably documented.

This variety is prized for its thick, rounded leaves decorated with silvery-white splash markings that vary naturally from leaf to leaf. This exact plant has been growing in my care for over 12 months and is currently flowering at the time when the picture was taken. Future flowering is not guaranteed.

Why You’ll Love It

  • Thick, rounded leaves with eye-catching silver splash markings
  • Established in my care for over 12 months
  • Can be trained to climb or displayed as a trailing plant
  • Easy to care for, resistant to underwatering.

How to Keep It Happy

Light: Provide bright, indirect light. Dappled light or gentle morning sun may also be suitable after gradual acclimation. Brighter indirect light supports stronger growth and may encourage flowering, while harsh direct sun can scorch the foliage.

Water: Water thoroughly when the potting mix is almost completely dry, then allow all excess water to drain. Do not keep the roots continuously wet. Water less frequently during cooler months or periods of reduced light.

Soil: Use a chunky, airy, fast-draining potting medium that allows oxygen to reach the roots while retaining a small amount of moisture.

Humidity: Adapts to average household humidity. Approximately 40–60% is generally suitable, although moderately higher humidity can support growth when paired with good airflow.

Temperature: Prefers temperatures between 65–80°F. Protect it from cold drafts and temperatures below 55°F.

Current Growing Conditions

Environment: Greenhouse-grown and seasonally moved
Humidity: Approximately 60–75%
Current Light: Shaded greenhouse light with no direct sun
Current Potting Medium: Happy Houseplant Haven’s Chunky Aroid Mix

Plants may need 7–14 days to acclimate to the light, temperature, and humidity in its new home. Some leaf movement, repositioning, or temporary slowing of growth can occur during the adjustment period.

Hoyas can bloom repeatedly from established peduncles, so the peduncle should not be cut off. Flowers are not guaranteed.

Important Plant Note

Live plants naturally change over time and may have small cosmetic imperfections, including minor leaf marks, natural blemishes, or older leaf damage. The plant may also continue growing between the time it is photographed and the time it is purchased.
