About This Plant

Hoya Pachyclada is a true Hoya species—not a hybrid—native to parts of Southeast Asia, including Cambodia, Laos, Myanmar, Thailand and Vietnam. It naturally grows as an epiphyte in seasonally dry tropical habitats.

This species stands out for its thick, sturdy stems and substantial, leathery leaves, giving it a more compact and sculptural appearance than many thin-vined Hoyas. Mature plants may eventually produce fragrant clusters of waxy cream to pale greenish-white flowers.

This exact plant has been growing in my care for over 12 months and has reached an impressive size for its small nursery pot. It is now ready to move up one pot size because it has become top-heavy and is no longer stable in its current 2.5-inch pot.

How to Keep It Happy

Light: Provide bright, indirect or filtered light. Gentle morning sunlight may be suitable after gradual acclimation, but protect the foliage from harsh direct afternoon sun.

Water: Water thoroughly, then allow the potting medium to dry almost completely before watering again. Its thick leaves and stems hold moisture well, so avoid keeping the roots continuously wet.

Soil: Use a chunky, airy and fast-draining potting medium that provides plenty of oxygen around the roots.

Humidity: Adapts to average household humidity. Approximately 40–60% is generally suitable, although higher humidity is fine when paired with good airflow.

Temperature: Prefers approximately 65–80°F. Protect from cold drafts and prolonged temperatures below 55°F.
