Botanical Name: Hoya verticillata ‘Black Margin’ (previously Hoya parasitica 'Black Margin')

The Hoya verticillata ‘Black Margin’ is a striking and uncommon variety loved for its glossy green leaves outlined by bold, dark margins. This elegant contrast gives it a refined, almost graphic look that stands out among other Hoyas. As it matures, it produces clusters of fragrant white flowers with pink centers — a classic Hoya reward for patient growers.

Native to Southeast Asia, this slow-growing vine is both resilient and adaptable, thriving in bright indoor spaces with minimal care. Whether trained to climb or allowed to trail, the ‘Black Margin’ adds a polished, tropical touch to any room.

How to Keep It Happy

Light: Bright, indirect light is ideal. Stronger filtered light may help bring out darker leaf margins, but introduce brighter conditions gradually to avoid scorch.

Water: Water thoroughly, then allow the potting medium to dry almost completely before watering again. Avoid keeping the roots continuously wet.

Soil: Use a chunky, airy and fast-draining potting medium that provides plenty of oxygen around the roots.

Humidity: Adapts to average household humidity. Approximately 40–60% works well, although higher humidity is fine when paired with good airflow.

Temperature: Prefers approximately 65–80°F. Protect from cold drafts and temperatures below 55°F.

Current Growing Conditions

Environment: Grown in indoor and outdoor greenhouse spaces and moved seasonally
Humidity: Approximately 60–75%
Current Light: Indirect sunlight
Current Potting Medium: Happy Houseplant Haven’s Chunky Aroid Mix

This plant may need 7–14 days to acclimate to the light, temperature and humidity in its new home. Some leaf movement, repositioning or temporary slowing of growth can occur during the adjustment period.

Because this plant currently receives indirect greenhouse light, introduce substantially brighter light or direct morning sun gradually.

Important Plant Note

Live plants naturally change over time and may have minor cosmetic imperfections, natural blemishes or older leaf damage. The plant may also continue growing between the time it is photographed and purchased.

The name Hoya Parasitica Black Margin remains common in cultivation, but the plant is listed here under the currently accepted botanical treatment, Hoya verticillata var. verticillata. “Black Margin” is being used as the familiar horticultural descriptor rather than as a formally verified cultivar name.
