About This Plant
This is an unidentified cane-type Begonia, so I’m intentionally listing it as NOID rather than assigning a species or cultivar name that cannot be verified.
Cane Begonias are known for their upright, bamboo-like stems with thickened nodes and foliage that grows from those canes. The group includes both naturally occurring species and a huge number of horticultural hybrids, which can make exact identification difficult once a plant’s original label is lost. The American Begonia Society notes that there are thousands of cane cultivars in circulation, many with overlapping foliage traits.
This particular plant has glossy rounded green leaves with beautiful deep red coloring on the undersides, reddish stems, and warm tones in some of the newer growth. Red-Backed Cane Begonia is being used as a descriptive trade name for this plant, not as a confirmed cultivar name.
This exact plant has been growing in my care for over 12 months and already has an impressive 16-inch spread while still growing in a 2.5-inch pot.

How to Keep It Happy
Light: Bright, indirect or filtered light is ideal. Cane Begonias also do well in partial shade. Protect the foliage from harsh direct sunlight, which may cause scorching.
Water: Water when the surface of the potting medium is nearly dry. Water thoroughly, then allow excess water to drain. Avoid keeping the roots continuously wet.
Soil: Use a loose, well-draining potting medium that retains some moisture without remaining soggy.
Humidity: Moderate to higher humidity works well. Good airflow is especially important in humid conditions to help reduce the risk of powdery mildew, botrytis and stem problems.
Temperature: Comfortable indoor temperatures around 65–80°F are suitable. Protect from frost and cold drafts.
Current Growing Conditions
Environment: Grown in indoor and outdoor greenhouse spaces and moved seasonally
Humidity: Approximately 60–75%
Current Light: Indirect sunlight
Current Potting Medium: Happy Houseplant Haven’s Chunky Classic Mix
This plant may need 7–14 days to acclimate to the light, temperature and humidity in its new home. Some temporary slowing of growth, leaf repositioning or dropping of an older leaf can occur while it adjusts.
Because this plant currently grows in relatively high humidity, maintaining good airflow while it transitions to household conditions is helpful.
Important Plant Note
This plant is sold as NOID, meaning its exact species, hybrid parentage and cultivar name have not been confirmed.
Red-Backed Cane Begonia is a descriptive name based on the plant’s cane growth habit and red-backed foliage. It should not be interpreted as a registered or verified cultivar name.
Live plants naturally change over time and may have minor cosmetic imperfections, natural blemishes or older leaf damage.
