About This Plant
The Flapjack Succulent is a true species, Kalanchoe luciae, rather than a hybrid. It is native to southern tropical and southern Africa, where it grows in seasonally dry environments.
This quirky succulent is known for its thick, rounded leaves that grow upright and overlap like a stack of pancakes. The leaves are generally green to gray-green and may develop pink or deep red coloring around the margins when the plant receives enough light.
These Haven’s Choice plants have been growing in my care for over 12 months and are ready to move into a slightly larger pot. Each plant will have the same recognizable paddle-shaped growth, although the leaf arrangement, coloring, fullness and number of offsets will naturally vary.
Why You’ll Love It
- Thick paddle-shaped leaves create a bold, unusual look
- Leaf margins may develop pink or red coloring in brighter light
- Drought-tolerant and easy to maintain
- Established in my care for over 12 months
- Ready to move into a slightly larger pot
How to Keep It Happy
Light: Provide very bright light. Indoors, place it near a bright window where it can receive strong indirect light and some gentle direct sun. More light encourages compact growth and stronger red coloring, but introduce direct sunlight gradually to prevent scorching.
Water: Allow the potting medium to dry completely between waterings. Water thoroughly until excess drains from the pot, then wait until the medium is fully dry before watering again. Reduce watering during cooler or lower-light periods.
Soil: Use a gritty, fast-draining cactus and succulent mix in a container with drainage.
Humidity: Prefers low to average household humidity with good airflow. Additional humidity and misting are not needed.
Temperature: Prefers approximately 60–80°F. Protect from frost, cold drafts and prolonged temperatures below 50°F.
Current Growing Conditions
Environment: Grown indoors and outdoors and moved seasonally
Humidity: Approximately 25–50%
Current Light: Indirect sunlight
Current Potting Medium: Happy Houseplant Haven’s Cactus & Succulent Mix
This plant may need 7–14 days to acclimate to the light, temperature and humidity in its new home. Temporary slowing of growth or slight changes in leaf position or coloring may occur during the adjustment period.
Because these plants are currently growing in indirect sunlight, introduce stronger light or direct sun gradually.
Ready for an Up-Pot
This plant is established in its current nursery pot and ready to move into a slightly larger container. Choose a pot with drainage that is only moderately larger than the current root ball.
If the plant is shipped, allow it to acclimate to its new environment before repotting unless there is an immediate issue with the pot or growing medium.
Important Plant Note
The photos are representative of the plants available and do not show the exact individual plant you will receive. Your Haven’s Choice plant will be selected from the same group in your selected 2.5-inch or 3-inch square nursery pot with similar overall size and maturity. 3" will be sold first.
Leaf arrangement, coloring, red margins, fullness and the number of offsets may vary. Strong red coloring is influenced by light and is not guaranteed.
