About This Plant
Philodendron ‘Birkin’ is a cultivated Philodendron known for its glossy dark-green leaves covered in fine cream-to-white pinstripes. New leaves can emerge with lighter coloring and develop stronger striping as they mature, giving each leaf a slightly different pattern.
Its exact horticultural origin is not completely settled. Birkin is widely believed to have originated either as a mutation connected to the ‘Rojo Congo’ line or from cultivated Philodendron parentage involving similar self-heading hybrids. Unlike a naturally occurring Philodendron species, Birkin was developed and selected in cultivation.
This exact plant has been growing in my care for over 12 months and was repotted about 8 weeks ago. It is established in its 4-inch clear nursery pot and showing the compact, upright growth habit Birkin is known for.
Why You’ll Love It
- Dark green leaves with fine cream-to-white pinstriping
- Every leaf develops its own variegation pattern
- Compact, upright growth works well on shelves and plant stands
- Established in my care for over 12 months
- Recently repotted and already settled into its current pot
How to Keep It Happy
Light: Bright, indirect or filtered light is ideal. Good light helps maintain the striped variegation, but harsh direct sun can scorch the lighter portions of the leaves.
Water: Water when the upper portion of the potting medium begins to dry. Water thoroughly and allow excess water to drain. Avoid keeping the roots continuously soggy.
Soil: Use a chunky, airy and well-draining aroid mix that retains some moisture without becoming compacted.
Humidity: Prefers moderate humidity. Approximately 50–60% or higher works well when paired with good airflow.
Temperature: Prefers approximately 65–85°F. Protect from cold drafts and prolonged temperatures below 60°F.
Current Growing Conditions
Environment: Grown in indoor and outdoor greenhouse spaces and moved seasonally
Humidity: Approximately 60–75%
Current Light: Indirect sunlight
Current Potting Medium: Happy Houseplant Haven’s Chunky Aroid Mix
Recent Repot: Repotted about 8 weeks ago
This plant may need 7–14 days to acclimate to the light, temperature and humidity in its new home. Some leaf movement, repositioning or temporary slowing of growth can occur during the adjustment period.
Because this plant currently receives indirect greenhouse light, introduce substantially brighter light or direct morning sun gradually.
This plant was repotted about 8 weeks ago and should not need another immediate repot. Allow it to continue settling into its current container before increasing the pot size again.
Important Plant Note
Live plants naturally change over time and may have small cosmetic imperfections, including minor leaf marks, natural blemishes or older leaf damage. The plant may also continue growing between the time it is photographed and purchased.
Variegation is naturally variable. Future leaves may develop more or less cream or white striping than the leaves currently shown.
