About This Plant

The Reverse Variegated Spider Plant is a cultivated variegated form of Chlorophytum comosum. Instead of the familiar creamy stripe running down the center of each leaf, ‘Variegatum’ has green-centered leaves edged in white—giving the classic Spider Plant look a fun little twist.

The underlying species is native across a broad region of Africa, extending from western tropical Africa and Ethiopia into southern Africa. The exact breeder or horticultural origin of the ‘Variegatum’ selection is not reliably documented.

These quirky Haven’s Choice plants have been growing in my care for over 12 months. Each selected plant will be in the listed 3.5-inch clear cup with a similar overall size, maturity and reverse-variegated coloring.

Why You’ll Love It

  • Green-centered leaves with bright white margins
  • A quirky twist on the classic variegated Spider Plant

  • Easy-care and adaptable to normal household conditions
  • May eventually produce arching stems with white flowers and baby plantlets

How to Keep It Happy

Light: Bright, indirect light is ideal. It can tolerate medium light, but protect the leaves from harsh direct sun, which may cause scorching.

Water: Allow the upper portion of the potting medium to dry slightly, then water thoroughly and allow the excess to drain. Avoid keeping the roots continuously soggy or leaving the plant completely dry for long periods.

Soil: Use a well-draining potting medium that still retains some moisture around the roots. In an especially fast-draining mix, check the plant more frequently rather than watering on a fixed schedule.

Humidity: Average household humidity is suitable. Approximately 30–60% works well, and additional humidity is usually unnecessary.

Temperature: Prefers approximately 60–80°F. Protect from frost, cold drafts and prolonged temperatures below 50°F.

Current Growing Conditions

Environment: Grown indoors and outdoors and moved seasonally
Humidity: Approximately 25–50%
Current Light: Indirect sunlight
Current Potting Medium: Happy Houseplant Haven’s Cactus & Succulent Mix

This plant may need 7–14 days to acclimate to the light, temperature and humidity in its new home. Some temporary slowing of growth or slight repositioning of the leaves may occur during the adjustment period.

Because these plants are growing in a fast-draining mix, check the moisture level rather than following a strict watering schedule. Gradually introduce any substantially brighter light or direct morning sun.

Important Plant Note

The photos are representative of the plants available and do not show the exact individual plant you will receive. Your Haven’s Choice plant will be selected from the same group in the listed 3.5-inch clear cup with similar overall size and maturity.

Each plant is naturally unique, so the leaf arrangement, width of the white margins, fullness, arching shape and number of plantlets may vary slightly.
